Food is most important. Make sure to intake at least 1 gram of protein per pound you weigh. Protein powder can help you get your protein in easier than whole foods. Supplementing 1-2 protein shakes a day is not a bad idea if you have the money. Lets say you are 150lb. You would want at least 150 grams of protein a day, about 200 grams of carbs a day, and about 50 grams of good fats a day. That is just a rough outline. You may also want to consider using a recovery supplement such as Xtend. Scivation Xtend was named the 2009 recovery supplement of the year. It will help you recover from your workouts faster and help your body make the most of your workouts. This is especially important if you are only lifting three times a week.

Work with weights that you can only lift a maximum of 6 or 7 times in a row. Increase your sleep. Eat a post workout fruit meal (bananas or mangoes). Your body needs glucose to grow not protein. Infants are the fastest growing creatures and yet they only get 5% of their calories from protein (mother’s milk).
